By the end of 2024, environmental law will change for retailers selling compost and they will be required to only stock peat free alternatives in an effort to protect peat bogs as a vital habitat for the natural world. Bernaville has exceeded this target by over a year and now offer a full range of peat free Ericacious, peat free grow bags, peat free potting and peat free multi-purpose composts.
Our own peat free plug plants are also crucial to becoming a peat free Garden Centre and we are proud to say our home-grown veg, herbs & strawberries (red pots) are now 100% peat free. We are also actioning trials for raising all our homegrown bedding plants in peat free soil.
We are working closely alongside our suppliers to be able to bring you a complete range of totally peat free compost that is not only beneficial to the earth around us but also actually works and is able to be used for what you need it for!
Not every compost is the same; specific jobs and plants in the garden need specific compost. Plants grow differently and require different feed, moisture and ph level.
For example:
- Westland Peat Free Compost contains a new revolutionary new peat alternative engineered to outperform all peat-based blends and has been specially developed to help plants at every stage of their life; from sowing to potting on and planting outside.
- New Horizon All Plant Compost is a naturally peat free formulation that gives plants triple goodness. It is ideal for all types of plants and can feed for up to six weeks.
- Peat Free Ericaceous Compost is for all acid loving plants such as rhododendrons, azeleas and heathers.
- Miracle-Gro Peat Free Premium Moisture Control Compost is part of the high-performing Miracle-Gro peat-free range. With its unique 3-part patented formulation, this peat-free compost caters for the needs of all mature plants in pots and hanging baskets and will feed for 3 months.
- Rocket Grow Compost, a local, sustainably built compost company from Somerset is now also available. Their farm is now helping gardeners make a peat free choice for their gardens using renewable energy sources and come from locally grown, traditional crops. Learn their story HERE.
There are also a range of complementary natural fertilisers that we recommend using alongside these new peat free composts to ensure your plants continue to thrive. Look out for them in the compost area.
There are a variety of other peat-free alternatives too; all providing different conditions for growing. The best thing to use will depend on what you want to grow and the existing soil you have in your garden. You may want to research and experiment with Bark chippings or Wood fibre for example, so speak to one of our friendly and knowledgeable team in store if you need any advice.
