Dahlias: A Carnival of Colour for your Garden

Dahlias, a native of Mexico, Central America and Colombia, are experiencing a resurgence in popularity. These bushy, tuberous perennials are perfect for planting in summer borders, patio pots and for home cut flowers. They can flower until the first frost, are easy to grow and adaptable to various soil types. Dahlias come in a carnival of colours and foliage, and with constant breeding and selection have developed into many forms.

Dahlia flowers symbolise positivity and stand out, making them ideal gifts for admired individuals. They express support, good luck, and congratulations during significant life changes, representing commitment and honesty. Additionally, dahlias invite positive energy and reflect kindness and love.

To make the most of these vibrant flowers, plant up dormant tubers in April or already flowering dahlias can be planted in June for instant effect. Be ready to support them as they grow, as they can become quite tall. Keep the dahlias well-fed and watered and add a high potash plant feed as soon as the flower heads appear. Deadhead the petals when they fall to keep the flowers blooming as long as possible. Keep in mind that pointed buds are for deadheading, while rounded buds are the new flowers. Once the season is over you can leave the tubers in the ground until the foliage has been blackened by frost, then lift them and store in a cool dry spot until Spring again.
